‘Zombieland 2′ Back in Development; New Writer Attached

In the five years since Zombieland hit theaters, zombies haven’t gone out of style one bit. AMC’s The Walking Dead still has record-breaking ratings, will soon be joined by a companion series, and already has another zombie-infested series on Syfy  – Z Nation –  for competition. In theaters, World War Z was successful enough to earn a sequel and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies has finally moved out of development hell.

Zombieland, too, was back briefly when Amazon produced a pilot episode based off the movie for one of its potential original series. The Zombieland series would’ve continued the adventures of Columbus, Tallahassee, Wichita and Little Rock, but its pilot didn’t win itself enough fans and Amazon chose to pass on the series.

That was the last we’d heard of any news pertaining to more Zombieland, but a follow-up to that film has remained one of the sequels we most want to see. So it’s no surprise we’re excited to share the news (via Deadline) that Sony Pictures is ressurecting Zombieland 2 with writer Dave Callaham (The Expendables). The original film’s director, Russ Fleischer is expected to return and will also serve as script supervisor.

In addition to penning The Expendables series, Callaham received story credit on Legedary’s Godzilla, but neither of these films really speak to whether or not he has the wit needed for a quirky project like Zombieland 2. This makes Fleischer’s involvement all the more important, because at least then there are some ties back to the original film.

And really, perhaps it was Fleischer more than Zombieland‘s writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese that turned that zombie apocalypse movie into such a hit. After all, both Wernick and Reese were involved in the failed Amazon pilot. Though, while the pilot as a whole wasn’t well-received, Reese lays the blame on fans’ dislike of new actors in the roles originally played by Emma Stone, Woodey Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, and Abigail Breslin.

And if that’s true, it begs the question: Will a sequel be bringing back those actors? Surely, were Zombieland 2 continuing where the first film left off, fans would expect Stone, Harrelson, Eisenberg, and Breslin to return. Yet, all those actors have only become more in demand in the years since Zombieland, and securing all four could prove difficult.

Plus, seeing as all of their careers have only boomed over the past five years, each would likely require a higher salary, and it’s unclear what kind of a budget Sony has in mind for this sequel. The original earned $100 million worldwide, but that’s no guarantee a sequel would do the same.

In that case, a Zombieland sequel might be better off starting fresh. New characters set within the same post-apocalyptic future could do very well as long as the style and tone of the original Zombieland was retained. Besides, it could be interesting to see what rules another group of survivors make up in order to keep themselves alive.

Are you happy to hear there’s still hope for a Zombieland sequel? Would you rather it pick up where the first movie left off, or be a whole new story with new characters? Tell us what you think in the comments below!
