Watch Ryan Reynolds Accept the Entertainer of the Year Award

It’s been a long road for Ryan Reynolds, one of 2016’s biggest stars, and who seems to be finally receiving the recognition for his work that fans have been more than aware of for years. After several failed attempts at finding success in the comic book genre, both as Wade Wilson/Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine and 2011’s Green Lantern, the actor finally got to make the movie he’s been wanting to his entire career with Deadpool. Directed by Tim Miller, and written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, the film was a rated-R comic book success that not only received critical acclaim, but also ended up emerging as one of the year’s biggest financial successes.

Right now, with not only Deadpool 2 in the works, but several other projects already set as well, it seems like Reynolds is finally experiencing the success that he’s been working his entire career towards. The streak was only continued during last night’s Critics Choice Awards as well, when he won the award for Best Actor in a Comedy for his performance in Deadpool.

In addition to his win in that category though, Reynolds’ biggest honor of the night came when he was awarded EW‘s Entertainer of the Year. Thanking both his wife, and according to him “for no reason at all,” his children, Reynolds took the opportunity to touch on the relatability of Wade Wilson as a character, before dedicating the award to the Make-a-Wish Foundation and the SickKids Foundation of Toronto: two non-profits who treat kids suffering from cancer, and who he’s worked closely with in the past. He also dedicated the award to two kids he knew who passed away from the disease, Connor McGrath and Grace Bowen, whom he met through the non-profits:

“The character had cancer and some of the people that this character resonated with was sick kids. So I would like to dedicate this honor to the Make-a-Wish Foundation and the SickKids Foundation of Toronto, two incredible organizations that do so much for so many kids in need. And I’d also like to dedicate this award to the memory of my friends, Connor McGrath and Grace Bowen. They didn’t lose the battle. They started a fight and it’s up to us to finish it.”
