‘Terminator: Genisys’ Motion Poster; First Trailer Arrives Thursday

We got Jurassic World and Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens trailers last week and this upcoming Thursday, we’ll be getting our first trailer for yet another big franchise revival scheduled for 2015, with Terminator: Genisys. A motion poster for the movie has dropped ahead of then (see it above), offering the stylish – if somewhat confusing – image of a T-800 robot slowly crumbling to a pile of (metallic) dust.

“Confusing” probably sums up how many people currently perceive the Terminator semi-reboot; or “re-imagining,” as costar J.K. Simmons put it. Genisys picks up in a post-Judgement Day future as adult John Connor (Jason Clarke) sends Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney) back in time to 1984, but there Reese encounters a very different version of Sarah Connor (Emilia Clarke) than he expected; Courtney has admitted that he is not even altogether certain “how you brand [the film] correctly.”

Arnold Schwarzenegger is costarring in Geninsys as a version of the T-800 robot with an aged biological exterior (or, if you will, “bio-exoskeleton”). Other key characters in the film include Doctor Who alum Matt Smith as an ally of adult John Connor (who might become a bigger player in future Terminator movies… should they happen), and Dayo Okeniyi (The Hunger Games) as the son of Terminator 2: Judgement Day scientist, Miles Dyson. Lastly, Simmons is rumored to be playing a detective who’s been investigating the “strange case” of Sarah Connor for many years; and thus, may act as a guide for longtime Terminator fans to this series’ “re-invention.”

Star Wars and Jurassic Park are both properties with nostalgic value for many people, and the Force Awakens and Jurassic World teasers seemed to tap into those feelings with varying degrees of success. (for a more in-depth discussion on that topic, listen to this week’s Screen Rant Underground Podcast episode). Which is to say, it will be interesting to see where the Terminator: Genisys teaser falls on that scale, given its similarities to those sci-fi properties.

Genisys has been the most contentious of the trio so far – due to both the confirmed details and the rumors surrounding the project alike – but a strong debut trailer showing would certainly help to improve the general outlook for the movie. And thus, would likewise improve people’s faith in director Alan Taylor’s (Thor: The Dark World) and screenwriter Laeta Kalogridis’ (Shutter Island) and Patrick Lussier’s (Drive Angry) ability to restore the Terminator franchise to its former glory.
