The third bit is likely the most intriguing. The final track is titled Guardians of the Whills Suite. The Whills are a fascinating part of Star Wars history that has hardly seen the light of day, but they are George Lucas’s original inspirations for what eventually became the Force, and the Journal of the Whills is the in-universe chronicle in which the stories of the Star Wars saga are recorded.
Despite appearing in multiple versions of the original screenplay for A New Hope (originally just Star Wars), the Whills never made it into current Star Wars canon – until a passage of The Journal of the Whill was cited in the prologue to the novelization for The Force Awakens.
Does this mean Rogue One is going to dig deep into Star Wars lore in ways other movies haven’t? We’ve already seen kyber crystals and Jedi ruins on Jedha in Rogue One trailers, but there’s really no way of knowing if this is anything more than a nod to the origins of the saga.
