As Star Wars fans continue to count down the days until Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, they’ll be able to celebrate the impending arrival of the spinoff film by purchasing items from the first wave of official merchandise. Companies such as Hasbro, Funko, and LEGO have a variety of products that will be hitting store shelves, and Rogue Friday is poised to be just as profitable for all involved as last year’s Force Friday event was. Star Wars collecting has become its own art form, and each year brings about fun new additions.
Lucasfilm is smart about licensing materials for consumers of all ages and price ranges. On the higher-end side of things is Hot Toys, which produce extremely accurate figures based on famous pop culture properties. Their Star Wars line is immensely popular, and they have plenty of opportunities to capitalize on that fact thanks to the annual film releases from Disney. Hot Toys has now unveiled a new Rogue One 1/6 scale figure, and it’s of a very familiar face in the galaxy far, far away.
On their Facebook page, Hot Toys has posted images and details about the new Darth Vader collectible. Special features include newly developed body and armor, a polished helmet sculpt, and a “sophistically tailored” costume. The figure also comes with a utility belt equipped with LED lights, a lightsaber hilt, and a stand modeled after the Death Star. Those who pre-order the figure will also receive a Death Star-themed double sided backdrop. The release date is currently unknown. Check out the pictures below:
As one would expect, this is another impressive offering from Hot Toys. It looks strikingly realistic and would be right at home on anyone’s shelf. Fans may notice that the figure comes with an assortment of hands for customization, allowing owners to pose the Dark Lord in whatever way they see fit. It’s interesting that the collectible does not have an ignited lightsaber, since it’s expected Vader will be involved in at least one action set piece during Rogue One. That may raise questions about just how “movie accurate” the figure is, but it’s a minor quibble that hardly takes away from Hot Toys’ latest. The studio is holding Vader back somewhat during marketing, so this could be part of that strategy.
Longtime Hot Toys and Sideshow collectors will know that this isn’t the first time Darth Vader has received this treatment; the Rogue One figure is merely the newest variation of the villain. However, for those just starting their 1/6 scale collection and looking for a great Star Wars product for a launching pad, this is a perfect option. The Sith Lord has long been one of the most famous characters in the zeitgeist, and just about every fan has at least one Vader product of their own.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story opens in U.S. theaters on December 16, 2016, followed by Star Wars: Episode VIII on December 15, 2017, the Han Solo Star Wars Anthology film on May 25, 2018, Star Wars: Episode IX in 2019, and the third Star Wars Anthology film in 2020.
