‘Star Wars: Episode 7′ Resumes Filming; Harrison Ford Back to Work

Harrison Ford injured his leg on the set of Star Wars: Episode VII earlier this year, which prompted many to be concerned about the 72-year old actor’s health – and, of course, left the legions of Star Wars fans to wonder what effect this could have on the filming of co-writer/director J.J. Abrams’ beginning chapter in the franchise’s next live-action movie trilogy.

Two months have passed since then and, as was originally predicted, Ford is now back in the saddle – as Episode VII has re-commenced with principal photography, following a two-week hiatus. Sources for multiple sites (including EW) are confirming that the entire Episode VII cast and crew have returned to work at Pinewood Studios this week. Ford likewise appears to have made a proper recovery, as nicely illustrated by his ALS Ice Bucket Challenge video; the actor’s rep has also told EW that Ford will soon be shooting his own scenes in Abrams’ Star Wars flick.

Ford as Han Solo has, for some time now, been rumored to play a substantial role in the story proceedings of Episode VII. The popular claim right now about the film’s script (co-penned by Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan) is that it features a pair of young protagonists (Daisy Ridley and John Boyega’s characters) who undertake a journey to find long-missing Jedi Master Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), with assistance from Luke’s old friend Han. What Luke has been up to over the three decades since the events of Return of the Jedi – besides growing a proper Jedi beard (see below) – remains to be seen.

Most of the recent discussion and rumor mongering for Episode VII has concerned its villains, be it their identities or what the remaining legions of stormtroopers look like now (see the film’s supposed redesigned stormtrooper mask). However, there has also been some discussion of the film’s young heroes; in particular, Boyega’s character, where his journey begins, and what his connection is to certain other players whose role in Episode VII remains a mystery (see: the rumors about who Game of Thrones alum Gwendoline Christie is playing).

Ridley’s character in Abrams’ Star Wars movie, as far as the rumor mill is concerned, is even more of a mystery than Boyega’s. We know she’ll play a leading role throughout the next Star Wars movie trilogy, though – and there is a strong possibility that Ridley’s portraying the daughter of Han and Leia (Carrie Fisher). A familial connection between Ridley and Ford’s characters would also explain why Han has a “gigantic” role – as he accompanies his daughter on her own adventure – but, for sure, that’s not the only potential explanation.

Star Wars: Episode VII opens in U.S. theaters on December 18th, 2015.
