Shazam: More Fan Art of The Rock As Black Adam Emerges

Shazam may still be up to two-and-a-half years away from its 2019 premiere, but the movie has already secured perhaps its biggest star. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has long been signed to play Black Adam, adding serious charisma and star power to an already-crowded DC Extended Universe. The big question with the wrestler-turned-Hollywood superstar, however, is how he will look in the role.

An impressively detailed fan rendering of Johnson as Black Adam by illustrator Juan Martinez surfaced in August, adding Johnson to a still from Batman V Superman. Another, less photorealistic full-body concept of Black Adam came out via artist BossLogic in September. The newest rendering of Johnson as Black Adam to surface online shows something of a hybrid of the two.

Digital artist Aiko Aiham posted a fresh rendering of Black Adam to his Instagram account, featuring Johnson’s goateed likeness (see below). The villain’s suit makes more pronounced use of the signature lightning bolt on his chest, illuminating it rather than understating. This rendering of Black Adam also has bigger, more detailed boots and gauntlets than Bosslogic’s design and has more of a general appearance of a true supervillain than Martinez’s more human version.

Black Adam’s lightning-based powers are also more prominent in the last two renderings as opposed to the first one. Aiham has also recently posted renderings of other DC supervillains like The Joker, Deathstroke, and Enchantress.

Been wanting to make this for awhile now so here is @therock as Black Adam 🙂

The common thread between the three most recent concepts of Black Adam is that they are relatively faithful to the appearance of the original character from the comics. The black suit, golden boots, and lightning bolt chest will most likely be part of the official design. The amount of extra visual effects vary between the three renderings and the look of Black Adam in Shazam’s final version could depend on how the filmmakers approach his abilities with lightning strikes (as opposed to his strength and stamina-related superpowers).

It remains to be seen how Johnson will appear as Black Adam in the actual movie, but if Suicide Squad and Batman V Superman are any indication, Shazam will ultimately take on a darker tone that’s closer to the look of Martinez’s concept than the more cartoonish later renderings. The movie still needs a director, after all. But regardless of how he looks, Johnson will need to deliver a compelling performance as Black Adam to make the character – and the movie – worth watching.
