Quentin Tarantino Considered Doing A Luke Cage Movie

In just a few short hours, Mike Colter will be reprising his role as Luke Cage from Jessica Jones, in his own solo series on Netflix, Luke Cage. This will be the third solo series to exist in the New York City corner of the MCU, with Iron FistThe Defenders, and The Punisher to follow. Cage is one of Marvel’s most popular characters, which means that fans have been waiting for a long time to see him exist in live-action. While this version of Cage exists on television with Cheo Hodari Coker running the show, this is a character that has been discussed as a big screen character.

Well before superhero movies were as popular as they are today, the genre was still well-liked enough to give Superman, Batman, Captain America, and the Fantastic Four films. As it turns out, Quentin Tarantino at one point considered making a Luke Cage film.

Yahoo was able to ask Tarantino about the upcoming series and his excitement for the character to be the star. As it turns out, he is a “huge fan” of the character and loved the way Marvel was able to introduce Luke in the comics. It was this level of interest in the character that made him consider a Luke Cage film after his making of Reservoir Dogs.

I had even considered, after Reservoir Dogs, doing a Luke Cage movie. But I ended up doing Pulp Fiction instead. So I think I might have made the right choice.

It is hard to argue that Tarantino made the wrong decision by moving ahead with Pulp Fiction instead of a Luke Cage film, but that does not make it any less of an interesting possibility. Tarantino’s aggressive and adult nature would have likely tested the boundaries of Luke’s unbreakable skin, but also allow for plenty of personal moments with him. Tarantino is a master at creating interesting and engaging dialogue, and the thought of him taking on this character back in the ’90s would have brought a completely different feel to the genre.

Even though Tarantino making a Luke Cage film would not have prevented Marvel to move ahead with their current plans, from all indications, Mike Colter looks to be the perfect Luke Cage. Then again, the thought of a bulked up and foul mouthed Samuel L. Jackson potentially starring in Luke Cage instead of Pulp Fiction is almost too interesting to pass up, but that is just pure speculation.

While this clearly will only be a hypothetical film, the character looks to have been given a greater and potentially better future in the hands of Netflix. Tarantino would have never done a sequel for the movie and fans now will have 13 hours with the character in his solo series alone. Fans will get their fix of Cage, even if they had to wait longer than they potentially had to if this movie had been made.

Daredevil season 1 & 2 and Jessica Jones season 1 are now available on Netflix. Luke Cage season 1 will arrive on September 30th, 2016. The Defenders and Iron Fist arrive in 2017. Release dates for Jessica Jones season 2, The Punisher and Daredevil season 3 have not yet been announced.
