New Moana Clips Introduce Gramma & Evil Crab Tamatoa

The 2016 movie lineup is quickly coming to a close, but there are plenty of notable films that have yet to hit. Movies like Doctor StrangeFantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and Assassin’s Creed have received much of the attention, but Moana could be the biggest of them all when everything is said and done. Family films traditionally do very well in the holiday season, and Disney have assembled a great track record over the years that keep people coming back.

For this time around, they have assembled the busiest man in showbiz, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, to star as the demi-god known as Maui. However, Auli’i Cravalho will be the true lead as Moana. The film is already generating buzz thanks to the animation, songs, and more, but it also has a noteworthy supporting cast to boast. While Moana and Maui have been the focus for most of the marketing, two new clips introduce Gramma Tala (Rachel House) and Tamatoa (Jermaine Clement).

Disney UK posted the two new clips on YouTube, each having a chance to introduce the new characters in different ways. Gramma Tala’s introduction is through a short clip between her and Moana, showcasing the animation and some of the film’s humor. The giant crab known as Tamatoa is only briefly shown in the footage, as the rest of his video is used to show an interview with Clement, where he explains why he and his character are so similar.

Neither Gramma or Tamatoa figure to be major characters in the film, but after most of the marketing has been solely focused on Moana and Maui, these two new clips are a nice change from the marketing team. Both still make it clear to those familiar with the movie that this is for Moana, but are different enough from everything else that has been shown. Moana is still heavily featured in both clips, but without Maui, Gramma and Tamatoa are given a chance to shine alongside the lead character.

Moana is hoping to follow in the footsteps of other successful Disney animated outings like ZootopiaBig Hero 6Frozen, and Wreck-It Ralph. Thanks to a holiday-friendly release date, it has a very good chance at succeeding in that quest, as long as the film gets a favorable reaction once it starts to get screened. In the meantime, these new clips further flesh out the world that Moana will take place in and should only further get people interested in the property.
