Netflix's Stephen King Adaptation 1922 Casts Thomas Jane & Molly Parker

Stephen King is an author whose work never really goes out of style, but it seems as though 2016 has really been quite the year for many adaptations of his works to be made for the screen, be it big or small. First came 11.22.63, which made its debut on Hulu back in February, and filming for the IT remake  wrapped earlier this year. 2016 has also seen The Dark Tower movie adaptation finally being shot, and though the release of that movie is now expected to be delayed, it will still be a cinematic highlight of 2017 for many King fans. On top of all that (and a Dark Tower TV series that’s being planned), Netflix is adapting King’s novel, 1922.

1922 is a novella by King, first published in 2010 as part of his collection, Full Dark, No Stars. It tells the story of Wilfred James, who confesses to killing his wife, Arlette, in Nebraska in 1922 with the help of their teenage son. Soon after, Wilfred becomes convinced that his wife’s spirit is haunting him. The story is told in the first person, leaving readers to wonder whether Wilfred is descending into madness, or really telling the truth. Though Netflix have yet to announce any planned release date for the project, two central roles has now been filled.

THR is reporting that Thomas Jane (Hung) has signed on to play Wilfred, while House of Cards actress Molly Parker will take on the role of Arlette. Additional casting includes Kaitlyn Bernard (The Healer), Brian d’Arcy James (Spotlight), Neal McDonough (Arrow), and Dylan Schmid (Horns). Production is currently underway in Vancouver, with the movie being written and directed by Zak Hilditch (These Final Hours).

1922 will be the second King project to be taken on by Netflix. The streaming service is also adapting Gerald’s Game; a suspense thriller that tells the story of a woman who accidentally kills her husband while she is handcuffed to a bed, leaving her with no means of escape. Carla Gugino (Wayward Pines) and Bruce Greenwood (Star Trek) are attached to star in that movie.

1922 is a dark, macabre, and twisted tale that’s disturbing to read about, never mind watch unfold on the screen. Fans of horror, and in particular King’s horror works, will no doubt be delighted that it’s being made into a movie though. Whether a fan of the genre or not, there’s no denying that King has a talent for telling a great, gripping story, and it’s evident in how many of his books get turned into films or TV shows. Netflix is enjoying ever growing success with its original movies, and with hit shows like Stranger Things already on its roster, it seems like King’s work will be right at home with the streaming service.
