‘Mission: Impossible 5′ Set Images & Video: Tom Cruise on a Plane

The Mission: Impossible movies are (in)famous for putting Tom Cruise’s IMF agent Ethan Hunt in a variety of ridiculous death-defying situations. These action scenes, as filmed, are all the more exciting to behold since Cruise actively participates in pulling these stunts off at real locations – be it bare-handed rock climbing at Dead Horse Point for John Woo’s Mission: Impossible II or swinging around the Burj Khalifa (the tallest building in the world) for Brad Bird’s Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol.

So, how will Cruise and director Christopher McQuarrie (Jack Reacher) attempt to top those acts in Mission: Impossible 5? Well, today we have at least part of the answer to that question – and it involves Cruise (quite literally) hanging onto the outside of a flying aircraft.

Mission: Impossible 5 (as it’s currently known) is being filmed in a handful of locations (including Austria, Monaco, and Morocco), in order to befit the as of right now under-wraps globe-trotting storyline cooked up by screenwriter Drew Pearce (Iron Man 3). However, the project’s Britain shoot included a sequence where Cruise (dressed in a fine suit) hung on the outside of an Airbus A400M, which flew some 5,000 feet above the British countryside. There were safety measures in place, of course (see the harness on Cruise), but The Daily Mail has the photos and video that prove it’s actually him up on the soaring Airbus.

Cruise’s iron will and relentless dedication to delivering impressive stunts/action work with his Mission: Impossible film series continues to impress, even now that we’re on the fifth installment. These movies lean heavily on how well their action-driven sequences and set pieces are constructed, and Bird’s ability to cleverly craft such action scenes were very much fundamental to Ghost Protocol‘s critical success (and its popularity among general moviegoers, in turn). As such, it’ll be interesting to see how McQuarrie does in that regard, by comparison.

Every director who has worked on the Mission: Impossible franchise has brought their own distinct “flavor” to the series recipe, and McQuarrie will surely be doing the same with his installment. It could be that, like Jack Reacher, Mission: Impossible 5 will end up having something of a gritty thriller throwback feel to it, blended with the big set pieces of modern-day tentpoles (see how next year’s Furious 7 is aiming to combine over the top vehicle stunts/action with a 1970s revenge thriller vibe).

Rounding out the cast of the fifth Mission: Impossible film’s is Rebecca Ferguson (The White Queen) as the new female lead. She and Cruise are joined by returning players Simon Pegg, Jeremy Renner, and Ving Rhames, all of whom are reprising their roles from the previous Mission: Impossible installments.
