Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, and now the Guardians of the Galaxy are all international movie stars, but one Marvel staple hasn’t had as much success as his comrades. That would be Bruce Banner/The Hulk, whose two solo outings have been a mixed bag in terms of critical and commercial reception. Ang Lee’s 2003 version grossed just $132.1 million in the States, while Louis Leterrier’s 2008 reboot (part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe canon) didn’t fare much better at $134.8 million – and it cost about $20 million more.
Those numbers are a far cry from similar genre titles, whether they come from Disney, Fox, Sony, or Warner Bros. As a result, Marvel hasn’t been keen to pull the trigger on The Incredible Hulk 2 just yet, but that might be changing in the near future. After Mark Ruffalo’s well-received turn as the scientist-turned-rage monster in the 2012 film The Avengers, public perception on the big green guy has seemingly changed and now fans are interested in seeing Ruffalo lead his own vehicle.
Due to the new wave of popularity the Hulk saw after Marvel’s superhero crossover, next summer’s The Avengers: Age of Ultron will be seeing the character take on a more substantial role than the first time around. Not only that, plot rumors are teasing some fairly big developments for Banner, which could set the stage for a return to the big screen. According to original Hulk actor Lou Ferrigno, not only are their plans for another Hulk solo film, but there are also plans for a new TV show.
Ferrigno chatted with Film Fad during Wizard World Comic Con, where he discussed the possibility that fans will be seeing more Hulk on screens in the near future. First, he was asked about who would play the title character for a new TV series and he offered this comment:
“Well, to tell you the truth they plan to do a TV series someday and it will probably be CGI, I don’t think you’ll ever see a human Hulk again. Because with the technology people would rather see something that is a little more animated like CGI.”
Those who have been following these projects for a while will recall the proposed television show that Guillermo del Toro started developing back in 2010. However, that project seems to have stalled, as we haven’t heard much about it since del Toro said he was waiting for the right screenwriter two years ago.
It’s possible that Marvel is considering a Hulk TV show, but until official word comes from the studio, fans shouldn’t get too excited. Marvel’s TV department is busy with season 2 of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., getting Agent Carter ready, and has a full slate of Netflix shows to produce. There’s not much room for another effects-heavy super-powered series at the moment.
When pressed for more information regarding his theorized TV series, Ferrigno stated that it’s most likely a “long way” down the road and that the studio is getting ready to produce another Hulk film (something Ferrigno has claimed before).
“I think in another year, they’re going to film a solo ‘Hulk’ movie. But I think the series can happen if they finish doing ‘The Avengers’ or the ‘Hulk’ movie, that’s my guess for now.”
In his previous comments, Ferrigno has said that work on Incredible Hulk 2 will begin after Age of Ultron comes out, so this quote is very much in line with his earlier sentiments. As is the case with the TV series, fans shouldn’t take this as confirmation that Hulk 2 is coming soon, but Ruffalo has said that the project is something Marvel is looking into.
The studio still has several unclaimed dates for Phase 3 films (though Inhumans and Doctor Strange could be taking some of those off the board), so there’s currently room on the release calendar for a new Hulk flick if that’s the way they choose to go. If the demand is there and box office dollars are waiting for the taking, it’s easy to see this sequel getting the green light at some point.
We’ll keep you updated on The Incredible Hulk 2 as more information becomes available.
