Of all the members of Marvel’s The Avengers, Jeremy Renner (who plays Clint “Hawkeye” Barton) is arguably tied to the most big budget action franchises with installments due out over the next few years. In addition to his bigger role in The Avengers: Age of Ultron — which more closely resembles what he signed on for with Marvel — Renner will also reprise his roles in Mission Impossible 5 as well as an upcoming Bourne film. Not to mention, that Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters 2 seems to be moving forward (though there’s no guarantee Renner will reprise as grown-up Hansel).
However, Renner’s re-entry to the Bourne franchise may have been pushed back in favor of Matt Damon picking up as Jason Bourne again, with director Paul Greengrass back in tow. With Renner playing supporting characters in Mission Impossible 5 and Age of Ultron, is the actor itching for a leading role – in the form of a solo Hawkeye movie, perhaps?
In an interview with MTV News, Renner said he’s not currently vying for his own Hawkeye film within Marvel’s Cinematic Universe. Renner views the archer as more of a supporting character who can work well jumping between other Avengers films. The actor specifically mentions Captain America 3 as a possible film in which Hawkeye could appear.
Read Renner’s full quote:
“I’m happy to be the ensemble. I’m not scratching or clawing to do a solo movie by any means. I think he’s a utility guy that can bounce around into other people’s universes a little bit, especially like ‘Cap 3.’”
While Renner’s comments may read as if his appearance in Captain America 3 is a sure bet, during the video interview, the actor winks exaggeratedly at the camera and goes on to say, “There’s whispers of that, so who knows.” It appears Renner isn’t any closer to confirming a role in the film as he was a few months ago.
Though there may be a logical place for Renner’s Hawkeye in Captain America 3 — especially since his character was cut from Captain America: The Winter Soldier — other factors come into play, such as whether or not the actor will be able to make time around his other filming schedules.
However, while Renner’s commitment to Mission Impossible 5 and the Bourne franchise may make a role in Captain America 3 difficult, it seems the actor is willing to play Hawkeye in Marvel film outside of the Avengers team ups, though perhaps not a solo film. Whether or not Hawkeye appears in Captain America 3 (or some other upcoming “Phase 3″ solo character movie) remains to be seen — and we may need to wait for an official report to confirm his involvement.
The Avengers: Age of Ultron premieres May 1st, 2015. Captain America 3 is currently due out May 6th, 2016.
