Warner Bros. third movie in the DCEU was supposed to be a universal hit that would help calm the fears of weary viewers following Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. Instead, Suicide Squad was also quite divisive, even while doing well at the box office. Despite the response from critics, there is and has been talk of the franchise continuing, with numerous reports of a sequel, as well as spinoffs for standouts such as Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn.

Any chance of a sequel could still be a few years away, but if a sequel does happen, it will be a surprise if the remaining cast members did not return. The big question, then, is whether or not David Ayer will return for a second round with Task Force X. While it is unclear if the studio wants him back, one of the cast members certainly does.

Jai Courtney, who played Captain Boomerang in the film, was a guest on the Happy Sad Confused Podcast (via: Batman-News) and when the polarizing nature of the film was raised, Courtney defended the direction that Ayer took. He said that the movie could never please everyone, and he wants another shot at it with the same cast and director.

“How do you please everyone? And I don’t think Suicide Squad ever intended to…. So no one’s setting out to upset the fan base, certainly not a fan base that can be as loyal as this kind of crowd can. But I don’t know how you can push the envelope or try and protect something [without taking risks]…..I know what I like in a movie, and it’s not the same thing as my twelve-year-old niece….It’s a challenge, and David [Ayer] did an incredible job, and I sure as hell hope we get to make another one with him.”

If Warner Bros. does follow through with Suicide Squad 2, it will be interesting to see whether or not Ayer returns. It is clear that Ayer wants to return and the cast obviously loves him, but the relationship between Ayer and the studio could be a bit rocky given the post-production process. Warner Bros. has already brought back Zack Snyder multiple times, even after how his films were received, so it would not be surprising to see them do the same with Ayer.

The film’s success certainly makes fast-tracking the sequel with Ayer at the helm an attractive option for the studio. After all, critical reception aside, Warner may very well see Ayer’s vision for Suicide Squad as a key part of a winning formula. From a financial standpoint, anyway.

Suicide Squad is now playing in theaters. Wonder Woman opens in theaters on June 2, 2017, followed by Justice League on November 17, 2017; Aquaman on July 27, 2018; an untitled DC Film on October 5, 2018; Shazam on April 5, 2019; Justice League 2 on June 14, 2019; an untitled DC film on November 1, 2019; Cyborg on April 3, 2020; and Green Lantern Corps on July 24, 2020. The FlashThe Batman solo movie, Dark Universe and Man of Steel 2 are currently without a release dates.
