Hot Wheels Movie to Be Directed by Justin Lin

There is currently no shortage of movies based on comic books, and recently video games have made a bigger push to be taken seriously in the world of film. Meanwhile, children’s toys continue to be a reliable source of Hollywood inspiration. The Lego Movie proved that even toys without a specific narrative behind them can be used to build a unique and fun world. Now that Legos have gone on to be a success on the big screen, other popular toys are sure to follow.

While The Lego Movie got help from other intellectual properties like Batman and the rest of the DC Universe to help fill out its character lineup, another popular toy line is headed to theaters, presumably without such a roster, as it appears a Hot Wheels movie is officially a go.

THR reports that Justin Lin will direct and produce a film adaption of the decades-old toy line. Lin, who is fresh off an impressive entry point into sci-fi with Star Trek Beyond, is certainly no stranger to making automobiles the centerpiece of his films after directing The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo DriftFast & FuriousFast Five, and Fast & Furious 6. There is no word currently on whether or not this film adaption will be live-action or animated, however.

Getting a director of Lin’s caliber would likely point to a live-action version of Hot Wheels taking place. Lin should have free reign to build a universe that revolves around these cars given the lack of human characters in the Hot Wheels “mythos.” Traditionally, Hot Wheels are used on customizable orange racing tracks, so developing a story out of a race could be one possibility for Lin to explore.

While there is not yet a timetable for the movie to be made, a film centered on the Hot Wheels property has been in development for quite some time. Lin’s previous work in bigger franchises could provide the film a chance to attract the kind of talent a movie like this will need. Lin has certainly worked with plenty of high-profile stars, so it wouldn’t be too much of a surprise to see the project attract the likes of Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson (cause he isn’t in enough movies right?) or anyone else the director has worked with in the past few years. Then again, it might be prudent to hold off on casting until a story is locked down, but with Lin signing on and the film receiving a green light, there’s a good chance the studio has some idea where this potential franchise is heading.

Lin’s ability to direct action ultimately leaves this movie in relatively good hands. After jumping cars through buildings along with countless other wild stunts, Lin’s ability to take real automobiles and blend them with more fantastical elements will likely be of great benefit to this film.

Hot Wheels is currently in development and does not have a release date.
