Guardians of the Galaxy had the potential to be Marvel Studios’ first flop. It featured a team of characters that virtually no one outside of hardcore comic book fans had heard of (even Stan Lee didn’t know who they were) and it was an unapologetically weird outer space adventure in which two of the heroes were a tree and a raccoon.
Ultimately director James Gunn injected enough charm and fun into Guardians of the Galaxy to make it one of the biggest successes of the year, with a worldwide box office gross even higher than that of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. It’s currently the second highest grossing movie of 2014 worldwide (beaten out only by Transformers: Age of Extinction) and is the #1 highest-grossing domestic release of the year. Needless to say, it’s getting a sequel.
Those who missed Guardians of the Galaxy in theaters (or those who just want to watch it again, many times over) can own the movie in time for Christmas as it arrives on home video and VOD in just a few weeks. To tease this upcoming release, Marvel has released a clip from the Making-of featurette that’s included on the Blu-Ray and some of the digital versions of Guardians of the Galaxy.
The BBFC has the full details of what the 30+ minutes of extra content includes (see below).
- Never-Before-Seen Deleted Scenes: ‘Fake Laugh’ (:23), ‘The Klyn Will Have to Do’ (:41), ‘No, I’m the Stupid One’ (:27), ‘Sisterly Love’ (1:40), ‘Dancing Guard’ (:45)
- Making-of Featurettes: ‘Guide to the Galaxy with James Gunn’ (20:01), ‘The Intergalactic Visual Effects for The Guardians of the Galaxy‘ (6:50)
- Exclusive Look at Marvel’s The Avengers: Age of Ultron (2:08)
- Gag Reel (3:42)
- Audio Commentary with director James Gunn
The Making-of, blooper reel, director’s commentary and deleted scenes are pretty standard fare for home video releases, but the two-minute exclusive look at The Avengers: Age of Ultron is likely to be a big draw for Marvel fans, especially since we’re unlikely to see another trailer until much closer to the movie’s summer 2015 release date.
A pre-holiday release is bound to do wonders for Guardians of the Galaxy‘s DVD and Blu-Ray sales. Even if the movie wasn’t worthy of a second (and third, and fourth…) viewing, those are some pretty sweet extras.
