Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is a little less than six months away, and a lot of fans are hopeful that the Chris Pratt-led sequel will recapture the magic that led to Guardians of the Galaxy being such a huge success (grossing over $700 million worldwide and maintaining a Rotten Tomatoes score of 91%). It also helped launch Pratt into stardom, which helped the actor land leading roles in other mega blockbusters like Jurassic World. No longer the obscure comic characters they once were thanks to James Gunn’s unique direction, Pratt’s Starlord and his misfit band of criminals are now huge stars in their own right in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Seemingly acknowledging this point, Pratt recently praised writer/director Gunn and his vision regarding the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise as a whole, during an interview.
Speaking to EW, Pratt opened up over his feelings on Gunn as a filmmaker, saying that he owed “so much” to the director and calling him one of the “best” filmmakers he’s ever worked with. Pratt didn’t stop there, claiming that Gunn knows the characters of the Guardians of the Galaxy world so well now, and that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 improves on the first film in almost every conceivable way. Pratt’s full thoughts on Gunn can be read below:
James Gunn is the auteur. He’s the man behind Guardians of the Galaxy. He wrote the movie, he directed the movie … The first one and the second one. So this is completely his vision. In my opinion, there is no equal in Hollywood. I think he is the best I’ve worked for, and with. And I owe so much to him. Really. And, it’s him. [Gunn] knows these characters so deeply now.
Pratt’s excitement over Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is palpable but not really all that surprising. Obviously the lead actor is going to express excitement for a film he’s involved in, but judging by the recently-released trailer alone, fans seem to be expressing just as much elation as Pratt is. And with Gunn at the helm once again, it’s not hard to imagine the sequel living up to or even surpassing the original film, especially now that he presumably has a much stronger grasp on the characters and their intricacies.
Still, some fans who found the original to be too focused on comedic scenes probably won’t have their minds changed by Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. This is especially true if Pratt’s promise of taking everything in the first film and making it “bigger and better” proves to be true (judging by the aforementioned trailer, this seems to indeed be the case). Regardless, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is poised to be a massive hit for Marvel thanks in no small part to Gunn’s flavorful style of filmmaking – one that goes a long way to setting his films apart from the rest of the MCU for a lot fans.
