‘Dredd’ Producer to Release Dark Judges Miniseries Online

Producer Adi Shankar has gained some notoriety in the last few years due to his investment in some noted genre films (The Grey, Lone SurvivorBroken City) – as well as his passion-project anti-hero short films, which include the Punisher short “Dirty Laundry” (featuring Thomas Jane back in the role), and the Venom short “Truth In Journalism” (featuring True Blood star Ryan Kwanten).

Of course, Shankar is probably best known as one of the forces that made the 2012 Dredd reboot happen – which ergo makes him a focal point for any questions about the possibility of Dredd 2, and/or any other plans for the franchise’s future.

Well, as NYCC 2014 is about to kick off in New York, The Wrap reports that Adi Shankar (who will be attending NYCC) has a new short film project that he’s been working on – a Dredd online miniseries that will focus on fan-favorite villains, The Dark Judges.

Ever since Dredd came out to low domestic box office returns, the future of the franchise has been uncertain. The film has continued to gain a cult following since its release on home video, which has prompted the “better late than never” sort of enthusiasm (and social media push) that keeps sequel talk alive – even though Shankar and star Karl Urban maintain that the chances of the sequel actually happening are slim.

In March 2013, we got the initial promise from Shankar that a “dope” short film was in the works; this new report by The Wrap pretty much confirms that the planned short has since become a full miniseries. The website claims that the miniseries will be released online later this month, for free. No further details on what the exact storyline will be – or if any Dredd cast members will appear.

For those who are unfamiliar, The Dark Judges storyline of the 2000 A.D. Dredd Comics are like the four horseman of the Apocalypse. They include Death, Fear, Fire, and Mortis – undead former judges who believe the best way to avoid lawlessness and crime is the elimination of all life. For a long time it was assumed that a Dredd sequel could explore the hypocrisy of the Judge system, while a third film would explore the world-ending threat of the Dark Judges.

Obviously, with sequels now looking unlikely, a new outlet is needed if fans ever want to see the Dark Judge story come to fruition – and Shankar seems to be obliging by giving them a multi-part miniseries to fully explore it.

Of course, the online miniseries approach resulted in divisive reactions to director Kevin Tancharoen’s Mortal Kombat Legacy shorts, so it’s not an automatic guarantee that this web series will find an approving audience. After all, how long did it take Dredd to connect with a larger audience?

We expect more details about the Dark Judge Online Miniseries will be revealed during New York Comic-Con – where we will be talking with Shankar face-to-face. Stay tuned.

BONUS: Here’s a video of Shankar thanking Dredd fans for their continued support.

The Dredd Dark Judge Miniseries will be released online later this month.

New York Comic-Con runs from Wednesday 10/8 – Sunday 10/12.
