‘Captain America 3′ Has A Title And Will Have Big Impact On MCU

If you didn’t catch our Blu-ray Breakdown, Captain America: The Winter Soldier released on home video today. We had the chance to interview directors Anthony and Joe Russo on last week’s episode of our Screen Rant Underground podcast as the pair promote the film while on break from working on its followup, the still-untitled Captain America 3.

An official title may not yet have been unveiled by Disney and Marvel Studios, but Captain America 3 does have one. As it turns out, the Russos have been working on Captain America 3 since February, confirming that Marvel Studios were impressed with The Winter Soldier and its directors selection during production enough to know they wanted to schedule a followup as soon as possible and bring back the same creative minds. The Russos are also joined by writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely who penned the first two films.

If you’re a fan, you’ll be happy to know that Captain America 3 not only has a title, but it’s already got a completed draft of the script, one that the directors label as “outstanding.” It’s actually all been a part of Marvel’s plan for a long, long time. Speaking with Crave while also promoting the Captain America 2 home video release, Joe Russo revealed some interesting tidbits about the next film.

“Joe Russo: If you’ve been talking to Kevin [Feige, President of Marvel Studios] the title has been in place probably for ten years in his brain. It’s all part of the road map that he’s laid out, and it’s all part of the bigger plan.”

That would mean that from the outset, as soon as Kevin Feige and the other decision-markers at Marvel Studios knew they were going to launch a Captain America franchise, that there was one big idea the would build towards and we’re going to see that in Cap 3.

“Joe Russo: Yeah, I think the way Kevin does it is there are big pieces that he knows he wants to build towards, but the way that you get there is open to interpretation and improv a little bit. That’s defined by who gets involved with the project, the writers and directors involved in the project. The big thing we knew we had to deal with in Cap 2 was the fall of Hydra. Similarly there is a very, very big idea at the center of Cap 3. But how we get there is all up to us. And I think why Marvel has been so successful is because it’s been such a clear plan, that everything is interconnected and they’re building emotional capital with each movie that you can then trade off of in the next film.”

This is it. Another big game-changing event will surface in Cap 3 much like the Hydra reveal and fall of S.H.I.E.L.D. in The Winter Soldier. At the moment, this next feature is the last solo movie for star Chris Evans, leaving his final appearance for The Avengers 3. Of course, Evans’ contract can change and he can sign on more more pictures down the road, but at the moment, Captain America 3 is one of Marvel’s biggest in-development projects, and it needs to be since it’s leading the summer movie season of 2016 and for a while there was even scheduled against Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Could we get a live-action adaptation of the Marvel Civil War? Could we see Captain America “die” and another character pick up the iconic shield and star-spangled uniform? Recent rumors regarding The Avengers: Age of Ultron point towards Cap potentially recruiting a few new characters to the cause and from our own chat with the Russos, we know it’s in Steve Rogers’ nature to lead. Maybe he’ll have his own “Secret Avengers” or “New Avengers” style team?
