The holidays may seem a long way away still, but Amazon has already started presales for their Limited Edition Box Set for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which is sure to be on many gift lists this year when it is released in December. Released in theaters this past March, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is the second movie in DC’s new Extended Universe, following on from 2013’s Man of Steel. The film did phenomenally well at the box office, raking in over $870 million in theaters worldwide. However, it was not an unqualified success, panned by critics and hugely divisive among fans. The Ultimate Edition, an R-rated extended cut, was released in July and met with more favorable reviews.
Now, is has been revealed exactly what will be going into their Limited Edition Box Set for the film, and it is going to be packed with much more than just the theatrical and Ultimate cuts of the movie.
According to Amazon, the set is currently available to pre-order for $123.99, and will be released on December 6th, just in time for Christmas shopping. As well as the original theatrical cut of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice on Blu-Ray + Ultraviolet, the set also includes the Ultimate Edition cut with an extra 30 mins of footage, Man of Steel, two hours of bonus content. As well as the films themselves, the box set also comes with several collector’s items: Batman and Superman figurines, six trading cards, and re-prints of Action Comics #1 and Detective Comics #27.
This set brings together the DCEU Justice League so far, with both Man of Steel and Batman v Superman, although it doesn’t include every DCEU film so far (Suicide Squad doesn’t have a DVD release date announced yet, but is projected for November/December). Although Wonder Woman was a significant character in the film – and felt by many critics to be one of the high points of the original cut – she doesn’t make much of an appearance in this box set, only on the collectible cards. The focus is clearly on the two title superheroes, with both getting their own figurine and a reprint of the comics where they made their first appearance.
This is sure to be a big Christmas wish-list item for fans of Batman v Superman, as well as anyone who hasn’t yet seen the Ultimate Edition of the film. The reprints of Action Comics #1 and Detective Comics #27 are an especially nice touch. Although they (obviously) won’t have the cash value that copies of the original comics would, a reprint is a great treat for fans of the characters who would love to own physical copies of the stories that started it all. The price is also going to impress anyone who would otherwise be purchasing the action figures and Blu-Rays separately – although it may seem steep to anyone less interested in the collectible extras.
There is no mention of a DVD commentary, however, which will be a disappointment to those fans who love the candid nature of director’s commentary features. This was a feature also missing from the original Ultimate Edition release, so it looks like we won’t be hearing from Zack Snyder in a commentary feature any time soon. However, we will presumably see Snyder, Geoff Johns, and the cast and crew in a variety of featurettes in the two hours of bonus material – although if you have watched the bonus material on the earlier DVD releases, there may not be a vast amount of new features to enjoy. Whether this is a must-have for serious collectors, or a nice extra for fans who haven’t seen everything in it just yet, it’s sure to be a big seller for Amazon’s holiday shoppers.
