Assassin's Creed Total Film Covers & Images Released

2016 has been a noteworthy year for video game adaptations at the movie theaters. The genre has struggled to find its footing and this was widely looked at as the year things would change for gamers at the theaters. The Angry Birds Movie and Warcraft have come and gone to varying levels of success and the last franchise up to the plate is Assassin’s Creed.

Ubisoft Motion Pictures is taking a proactive approach to adapting their video game properties, by observing the blueprint that Marvel designed and trying to approximate it for their own industry. They created their own film production studio, based on the strength of their stable of popular video game titles such as Splinter Cell, Watchdogs, and The Division. However, first out of the gate for the studio is their upcoming adaptation of Assassin’s Creed and their fingers are crossed that this can be the Iron Man for their filmmaking future.

Despite the fact that the video game franchise has sold over 80 million units, public awareness for the movie is relatively low. Particularly, with competition at the box-office from Passengers and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story within the same week’s span. With that in mind, the studio’s marketing campaign for Assassin’s Creed is heating up, as Total Film has now released brand new images and covers for the upcoming winter release.

The original video game centers on a secret war between the Templar organization and the lethal guild of Assassins, that has been waged for centuries. In the film, Michael Fassbender (X-Men: Apocalypse) plays Callum Lynch a descendant of an Assassin, Aguilar, from Spain in the 15th century. He is able to tap into his ancestor’s historical memories and relive them through a futuristic device known as the Animus, which he uses to combat the nefarious organization in both time periods. The upcoming adaptation is directed by Justin Kurzel (Macbeth) and also stars Marion Cotillard (The Dark Knight Rises), Michael K. Williams (The Wire), Jeremy Irons (Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice), and Brendan Gleeson (Edge of Tomorrow), which is a cast worthy of attention on their own merits.

Despite concerns that there will be liberties taken with the mythology, it’s clear from the new stills that the movie will be heavily influenced by the source material. Archery, close-quarters combat, secret blades, and horseback riding, are iconic elements of the franchise, so it’s nice fan service to see them represented in the film’s official screenshots. The Assassin Creed’s medievel parkour style, is a huge reason that the property stands out from the pack and even from the photos you can get a sense of the dynamic action style from the film. With a little less than three months until the movie’s release, this surely isn’t the last that we have seen of the blockbuster hopeful.

Assassin’s Creed will open on December 21, 2016.
