Ridley Scott’s now classic sci-fi/horror film, Alien, debuted in 1979, launching an entire franchise. It has since gone on to include three sequels — 1986’s Aliens, 1992’s Alien 3, and 1997’s Alien: Resurrection — as well as a prequel series kicked off in 2012 with Prometheus. Though Scott hasn’t helmed every installment in the Alien franchise, and there is a fourth sequel in the works with director Neill Blomkamp attached, the veteran of sci-fi blockbusters returned for Prometheus and its followup, Alien: Covenant.
Throughout production, and continuing even after filming wrapped, the social media accounts for Alien: Covenant have revealed a number of set photos teasing the upcoming franchise installment. However, whether depicting stars Danny McBride and Katherine Waterston, or Scott himself, the photos haven’t revealed much. Now, a new image is similarly enticing, while an accompanying message may tease the premiere of the film’s first trailer.
Twentieth Century Fox released the new photo from Alien: Covenant on Facebook along with a sequence of numbers: 130112062104. The image depicts a series of cryo stasis pods, presumably on the colony ship called Covenant for which the film is named, though one pod appears to be empty (or isn’t lit up for some other reason). Alien: Covenant will follow the crew of the ship as they land on an alien planet hoping to find a suitable home — but instead meet the planet’s violent inhabitants. Take a look at the new image:
Additionally, this is the second photo in as many days released with an unexplained series of numbers — yesterday, an image of Weyland-Yutani agents was revealed with the digits, 220512052104. Fans have speculated the numbers could indicate a timestamp, or a countdown to the release of the first trailer for Alien: Covenant. Whether the numbers are in fact a countdown, or have some other significance to Alien: Covenant, reports surfaced earlier today indicating the trailer may arrive soon.
Earlier this month, Fox screened footage from Alien: Covenant, including the first trailer, for press during a larger showcase of upcoming 2017 films. Reactions to the Alien: Covenant footage indicate Scott’s latest entry in the sci-fi franchise will certainly maintain its horror aspects, which returning Prometheus cast member Michael Fassbender previously teased. Considering the movie’s teaser poster featured a gruesome-looking Neomorph (a new creature in the Alien franchise) and the simple tagline, “Run,” fans likely have some idea of what to expect from the film.
That said, the first trailer for Alien: Covenant will be the best indicator of whether fans and casual moviegoers alike will be enticed back to theaters for a sixth entry in the Alien series. But, since Fox has released a number of new photos — including another of Waterston evoking a Ripley attitude — it seems the studio is gearing up for something. It seems likely that something is the debut of the first trailer for Alien: Covenant.
