This year’s Golden Globes nominees roster includes a few (welcome) surprise contenders – including Deadpool in both the Best Comedy and Lead Actor/Comedy categories. The HFPA having recognized breakout hits in the forms of HBO’s Westworld and Netflix’s Stranger Things with multiple nominations on the TV side of things, ought to also come as welcome news – for those who have quickly become die-hard fans of these respective TV series. Both of those shows are already confirmed to be getting second seasons in 2017 and 2018, respectively.
It’s also good to see that such smaller, but well-received movies as director John Carney’s Sing Street and Issa Rae’s HBO TV series Insecure managed to land a Golden Globe nomination, even given the heavy competition across the board in both film and television this year. There were some noteworthy absences from this year’s Golden Globes nominee roster – see Finding Dory in the animated movie category and Martin Scorsese’s Silence in movie/drama, for example – but by and large the HFPA managed to include some welcome variety in terms of the big and small screen nominations alike. Whatever films do win at the event will also gain even more forward momentum, in the ongoing race to the finish line – and the Academy Awards that await them there.
The 74th Annual Golden Globes ceremony will be hosted by Jimmy Fallon and take place at the Beverly Hilton on Sunday, January 8th, 2017.
